Obituary
MRS. CHARLES R. MARTIN Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Crosby Funeral Home for Mrs. Sarah Frances Martin, 92, widow of Charles R. Martin, who died Thursday at a Malden, Mass., hospital, The Rev. Richard J. Norsworthy of the First Universalist Church officiated. Bearers were: George Ellis, Everett Bennett, Linwood Seavey, Mervin Haskell, Floyd Merrill and Arlie Merrill. Interment was in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. She was born at Charleston, Aug. 29, 1865, daughter of Major and Sarah (Brown) Stewart. She had lived in Dexter for many years but last July went to Lynn, Mass., to stay with her daughter. The Martins were former owners of large potato acreage on Lower Main in this town. When Mrs. Martin observed her 89th birthday, while living in Dexter, she recalled for The Gazette some of her experiences as a rural school teacher in this vicinity for five years. While teaching in Exeter and Garland and at the Ridge School, many of her pupils were larger in stature than herself. She remembered that $4 to $4.50 a week was the average pay and $1.25 was the weekly rate for room and board. She was a member of Rebecca Weston Chapt., D. A. R., and the Universalist Ladies' Aid and Grange, all of Dexter. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Gladys McCormick, of Lynn, Mass. with whom she was making her home, she is survived by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
