Obituary
DEXTER - John Frederick Day, 95, passed peacefully August 7, 2023 surrounded by his family at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. John was born November 5, 1927 in Dexter, a son of Aldo Mark and Edith (Call) Day. He attended services at New Hope Baptist Church. He was educated in Cambridge and Dexter Schools. John was proud of his service in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked for the Town of Dexter for many years in various positions and also at Amos Abbott Woolen Mill. His favorite job of all was working at the bus garage as a supervisor and driving buses for the Dexter school district. He always had a sincere concern for the welfare of the students that never ended. The buses were maintained continuously to ensure they were up to his standards and in the winter, he personally got up early to check out the roads before school. He shared many stories of driving his regular routes involving the kids who rode on his bus. He especially enjoyed driving to games when his sons, grandson and nephews were playing sports. He was an avid outdoor sportsman who thoroughly enjoyed trips to his camp in Monson. His favorite outdoor activities were hunting, fishing and trapping. John also enjoyed his morning “meetings” with friends at A.E. Robinson’s, rarely forgetting his “Worn Out Red Cup”. The rest of his time was spent frequently riding throughout Dexter, to Crockett Road looking for deer in his blue buggy. His utmost joy in life was living on Mill Street, along with his brothers, Llewellyn and Harry and their families. He enjoyed sharing his wisdom on various topics, especially stories of hunting and fishing with nephews Bruce, Brent and Bob. John was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Ann Day and his parents; brothers, Llewellyn and Harry Day; sisters in law, Joanne Day, Joyce Day, Phyllis Chambers, Yvonne Hartford, Beatrice Knowles, Donna Knowles, Jean Knowles, and Gladys Knowles; brothers in law, Barry Knowles, Norman Knowles, and Arthur Knowles; and a niece Cynthia Hunt. He is survived by two sons, Steve and wife Cindy of Apache Junction, AZ, Johnny and wife Jenny of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; two daughters, Mary and husband Charles “Chuck” Willey of Sebastian, FL, Janie and husband James Huggins of Brunswick; eight grandkids, seven great grandkids; numerous nieces and nephews; brothers in law, Reginald Knowles and Ronald Knowles; and a very special friend Merle Hurd. John’s family wishes to express our utmost appreciation to the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough who provided the most professional and loving care to our father. We were in awe of how the staff welcomed us with daily greetings and the willingness to provide any assistance we may need. Especially heart touching was the Walk of Honor and the Honor Guards themselves. They want to ensure that all Veterans get their final salute. Much gratitude to them and all the veterans and staff who were there to show respect to our father. A memorial service and graveside service with military honors will be announced in the spring of 2024. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the William A. Keyte TIN (Tigers in Need) Fund for Dexter Regional High School students to help with their sports equipment needs; DRHS, 12 Abbott Hill Road, Dexter, ME 04930.
