Dexter - Carter Loren Smith, 81, passed away peacefully at home April 19, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born July 15, 1941, in Blue Hill, a son of Loren and Pheronia (Carter) Smith. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1959 and married the love of his life Sandra (Clukey) on June 15, 1963. Carter spent his life dedicated to protecting the Maine woods. Being a game warden was not just a career for Carter but a part of who he was. He started his career in 1970 and retired in 1995. After retiring he continued to work several different positions including at Baxter State Park, teaching criminal justice at Beal College, serving on the state Maine Guide boards, with the Maine Department of Conservation, at the Allagash Wilderness Water Way, on the West Branch of the Penobscot and finished his career as the manager of Peaks Kenny State Park. He enjoyed spending time at the hunting camp he built, spending time there with family and friends Ken and Richard. He also enjoyed camping with Sandra. When working as a game warden he would take his 2 daughters with him on "outdoor adventures" and also enjoyed teaching his granddaughter to fish. He enjoyed sharing his passion for the outdoors with others. Everyone who met Carter knew that he had many stories. He is survived by his wife Sandra; two daughters, Karen Smith, and Barbara and husband, Jim Monaghan; granddaughter, Lauren and husband, Melvin Waycott IV; a brother, Douglas and wife, Jean; and a sister, Jackie. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard; and sister, Roberta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Our Lady of the Snows Parish, St. Annes Church, 64 Free Street, Dexter. Burial will be in the Mt.
