Obituary
DEXTER - Joel Robert Getchell, 64, passed away in Corinna at the home of his loving daughter Casey on September 11, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Hartland on July 19, 1958, the son of Robert James and Beverly (Wallace) Getchell. Joel was the oldest of four siblings. Joel attended the Dexter schools and after high school enrolled in the music program at the University of Maine Augusta. He held several jobs, most recognized at Dexter Shoe and A. E. Robinson Mobil, but music was his passion. Over the course of his life, he was a member of numerous rock bands, the last of which was called The Breakers. He played the piano, acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar and even dabbled with the trumpet. He was a talented singer/songwriter and recorded at least ten CDs of his original music. He loved to listen to the music of others as well. Bob Dylan and the Beatles were his favorite musicians. Joel was an avid reader, enjoying the works of Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson. He was also a movie buff. His "matinee hero[es]" were Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. Joel loved sports, his cat Crash often keeping him company in his recliner while he cheered for his favorite teams, the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. As much as Joel loved music, literature, movies, sports and animals, his true love was his daughter Casey. He was devoted to her and as much as he hated feeling like a burden to her in his last days, he was grateful that she was with him in the end. Joel was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Beverly, and several aunts and uncles. Besides his daughter Casey and her partner Jonathan Forget of Corinna, he is survived by Casey's mother Judith Getchell of Dover-Foxcroft, two brothers, Bill and Jeff Getchell of Dexter, and his sister Debra Cookson of Dover- Foxcroft. He is also survived by four special nieces, Elizabeth, Kristen, Candace, and Jessica, along with their families, and many friends and extended family who will miss him very much. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00PM on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Dexter Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, Casey is accepting donations to the American Cancer Society. Joel's ashes will be committed to the ocean at his request, as he loved to travel and figured this was an excellent way to continue to do that.
