Obituary
DEXTER - George Allen McCourt passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 24, 2021, at the age of 81. George was born on November 7, 1940, in North Jay, Maine to Allen and Winnifred (Howell) McCourt. He was raised and spent most of his life in his beloved hometown of Dexter, Maine, graduating from Dexter High in spirit in 1959 and technically in 1960. George was a lifelong outdoorsman and adventurer. He learned to hunt and fish as a young boy and continued to be a crackerjack marksman, successfully shooting a partridge on a hunting trip a week before his death. George will always be remembered for his daredevil antics, whether racing around town in his flashy cars as a young man, jumping from dangerous heights into swimming pools, or skydiving. One skydiving trip, in particular, landed George in a tree where he was forced to cut himself out of his harness and fall to the ground in order to make it to a good friend's wedding on time. He had many memorable snowmobile adventures around the area traveling to Pittston Farms, Milo, and Greenville. In 1960, he met the love of his life, Priscilla (Bradbury), by picking her up off the floor at the Sebec Rollerland, where he served as a skate boy. Word has it that Priscilla had intentionally fallen in order to get George's attention, a rumor that neither will confirm nor deny. They married on November 3, 1962, and remained married for 59 years. George felt strongly that a man's work ethic was an indicator of his character. George began his career at the age of 15, working at the First National Store in Dexter and then at Dumbarton Mills during high school. He'd rush to work directly after school and finish a full swing shift. Later he worked hard to provide for his family at Dexter Shoe Company, R.C. Whitney and Sons, and the Maine Central Railroad. For the last 30 years of his career, he worked independently as a "Comfort Engineer" providing many in the area with the warmth of a properly maintained furnace during the cold season in Maine. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla (Bradbury) McCourt; daughters, Kimberly McCourt Ford, Kelly McCourt Peucker and her husband, Chris, and Katy McCourt; five grandchildren: Alex and Riley Ford, Ryan and Taylor Peucker, and Myles Scott; and sisters, Evelyn McCourt Turner and her husband, Rex, and Jane Hibbard Merrill and her husband, Charles. He was predeceased by his older brother, Stanton McCourt. Those wishing to honor George may make a donation in his name to the Alzheimer Association.
