DEXTER - Betty Norton Whitney, 95, passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2021, after a two year period of declining health. She was born October 26, 1925, in Mandan, North Dakota to William and Mary (Amundson) Norton. Betty was raised on a farm and graduated from Mandan High School, Class of 1943. Following graduation, Betty went to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Navy Department as a clerk typist secretary from 1943 until June 1946. It was at the Navy Department where she met her future husband, Robert Lord Whitney of Cambridge, Maine. They were married in August, 1946. She worked in Bangor on Columbia Street, while her husband attended the University of Maine from 1946 to June 1949. Betty and her husband settled in Cambridge for three years before moving to Dexter in 1952. Betty spent 10 years as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and worked for 20 years for H.L. Tillson & Co. hardware store in Dexter in the gift wares department. She was a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church and later the Christian Community Church. Betty was a devoted bridge player and taught bridge for a number of years through Dexter Adult Education. She also played golf and tennis for many years. Betty was a member of the Sunshine Club of Dexter. She had a passion for sending cards and notes to reach out to many people through the years. Betty is survived by her three children, Carol F. Whitney and husband, Richard Howard, of Augusta, Barbara A. Herring and husband, Steven, of Garland, and Richard Whitney and wife, Barbara J. Whitney, of Dexter; brother, William Norton and wife, Shirley, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; 6 grandchildren, Emily (Whitney) Wilson, Angela (McKusick) Dorman, Sarah N. Whitney, Elizabeth (McKusick) Moskovitz, Allyson (Herring) Gudroe and Angela (Herring) Armstrong; 13 great-grandchildren, Alanna Wilson, Zachary Wilson, Karrigan Wilson, Jacob Cardelli, Lily Carr, Meah Carr, Robert Dorman, Gunnar Moskovitz, Elle Moskovitz, Kevin Armstrong, Adele Armstrong, Cally Gudroe and Adalea Gudroe; one special nephew, Douglas Whitney of Greenville; 5 treasured nieces, Tracy (Norton) Kaluzniak of Minnesota, Loree Norton of North Dakota, Nancy (Norton) McCarrell of Minnesota, Christine (Norton) Douthett of Virginia, and Karen (Norton) Brunetto of Ohio; a very special sister-in-law, Myra "Micki" (Stowman) Norton of Bismarck, North Dakota; 5 grand-nieces and 3 grand-nephews that Betty was very close to: Kassie and Heather Kaluzniak, Addy McCarrell, Paige Douthett, Grace Brunetto, Daniel Kaluzniak, Jake Douthett and John Brunetto; and a very special friend, Judy Ridlon of Dexter, who the family thanks for helping to care for Betty during her illness. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1994; and a brother, Wesley, in 2018. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, August 30 at First Universalist Church in Dexter. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Due to COVID, there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Historical Society, P. O.
