Philip Rittal Mealey, 81, of Newark, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at University Hospital in Newark, NJ. Phil was born in Caribou, Maine. He graduated from Dexter High School in Maine in 1956 and then went on to Graduate from Boston University in 1960 where he studied Classical Music. Philip Mealey’s musical career has spanned many areas of the musical spectrum, both classical and popular. He debuted as a classical pianist in Town Hall. As an accompanist, he has worked with Johanna Meler, George Shirley, Jan Peerce and Lucine Armana. He has played many musicals over the years and two years ago was the pianist for the off-Broadway production of The Happy Prince. For several years he has been playing for Kay Armen, seen in the recently released DVD of MGM’s “That’s Entertainment.” Philip has been guest organist at St. Peter’s in Rome and conductor of the Papal audiences since 1993. For the last five years he has been touring on the lecture-tour circuit with Father Frank McNulty in a program entitled “The Wit and Wisdom Of Broadway.” Philip is listed in ASCAP as both a composer and publisher and has arranged and published over forty songs with composer Russell Parry as well as arranging several for string quartet. Last October, he and Kay Armen performed at the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Gala at Tully Hall and have been invited back to perform again this October. He was the organist at St. Benedict’s church in Newark for many years. Son of the late Philp and Malvina Mealey; loving brother of Peter M. Mealey and his wife Barbara of Dexter, ME and Melvin Mealey of Ocala, FL; also survived by 3 nieces, a nephew, several cousins and two very special friends Dale Livingston, musician and Bruce Peterson,Livia and Dr. Andrew Galante all from New Jersey.. Due to the restrictions recently placed on occupancy in public spaces by the State of New Jersey in the ongoing efforts to limit the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Philips funeral arrangements are private. There will be a memorial service this summer for family and friends to be held in Newark NJ.
