Obituary
BRUNSWICK AND DEXTER – James Packard Granger, 85, died Friday, October 9, 2015 at The Vicarage by the Sea in Harpswell. Jim was born in Dexter, February 6, 1930, the son of Frederick J. and Constance (Smart) Granger. He grew up in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School, Bentley College, and Boston University, where he was honored by Beta Gamma Sigma. On December 20, 1952, Jim married Joan Peabody in Manchester, Massachusetts. He served in the Army, and subsequently the Marine Corps, before beginning his career as a CPA with Baker and Adam in Portland in 1957. In 1963 he became Controller of Bowdoin College, retiring in 1989. He served the Brunswick community as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee, Treasurer of First Parish Church, and Trustee of Coastal Savings Bank, Regional Memorial Hospital, and the Brunswick Sewer District. In retirement, Jim could often be found on the golf course – any golf course. He and Joan spent springtimes in Pinehurst, NC. They also ventured to Europe on several bike trips, and especially enjoyed summers at Lake Wassookeag in Dexter, where they were frequently spotted biking the 15 mile “loop” around the lake. Jim is survived by his wife, Joan of Brunswick, daughter Annie Winchester and her husband Jock of Pemaquid, son Jim, Jr. and his wife Liz of Brunswick; brother and sister-in-law Pete and Anne of New Jersey; grandchildren Jenny Granger of Brunswick and Travis Granger of Texas; six great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the The First Parish Church in Brunswick on Tuesday, October 20th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Alzheimer’s Association, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, Maine 04074 or www.alz.org/tributes. A very special thanks to The Vicarage by the Sea for their exceptional and compassionate care.
