Obituary
Tammy Nieuwland Lockhart, 61, passed away with her family by her side, on February 26, 2019, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Born January 16, 1958 in Chelsea, MA, she was the daughter of Paul Nieuwland and Elizabeth Leavitt Nieuwland. She was a graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School, class of 1976 and studied at the University of Maine, Orono before settling down to raise her family in Dexter, ME. An avid member in society, Tammy had her hand in the building of Dexter historic playground, (some of her favorite memories come during this time), and funding of the new school project. In the 80s, Tammy volunteered for the Dexter Library board and she was instrumental in getting the Dexter Library to acquire PCs with Internet access. Tammy was a proud liberal Democrat and was actively engaged in local politics. She spent many years volunteering for the Democratic committee in Dexter. Her love for politics drove her to run for state representative. Though she did not win, she made her family, friends and hometown proud! In 2008, she had the honor of participating in an intimate gathering with Barack Obama and marked that as one of her most inspirational moments. With a notable career in reporting for The Eastern Gazette and later as a district reporter and feature writer for the Bangor Daily News, her love for reading and writing lives on in her articles. Tammy also wrote incredible poetry. Tammy started an online business in the 90s, called Hersey Hill, showcasing Central Maine craftspeople. She enjoyed traveling, biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. She leaves behind her two children, Julie and Tom Lockhart of Dexter, who love her more than words can ever express, and two dogs; truly the most spoiled dogs in the world. She became known as a second mother to many of her childrens friends, who cherish, her just as much as her own children do. Tammy valued all the special friendships she made throughout each aspect of life. She brought sunshine everywhere she went and her humor and kindness were monumental. Not a day will go by that she will not be missed. Her family would like to thank the community for all their generous support and outpouring of love during this difficult time. Donations in her memory can be made to Lucky Pup Rescue of Kennebunkport, ME.
