Obituary
Samuel Fineberg, the 16 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fineberg of Park Street met death by drowning in the lower park of Wassookeag Sunday afternoon when a canoe, in which he and Raymond Cayting of Bangor were paddling, was over turned in the squall. Young Cayting was rescued in 20 minutes or a half hour after the accident by O.C. Folsom whose canoe the boys had hired for an outing on the lake. The canoe was near the middle of the lower pond when the terrific squall and wind storm with rain struck and the craft was quickly overturned. No motor boat was available when the accident was observed by persons on the shore. It is understood that both boys secured a grip on the overturned craft. The Bangor boy managed to maintain his grasp on the canoe and Fineberg clung to the side until his grip weakened and he sank into the water. He was unable to swim a stroke and the waves were running high. Boats put out as soon as possible and the Cayting boy was rescued. He was in an exhausted condition. Grappling hooks were secured and the body of the unfortunate boy was rescued two hours after the accident and removed to his home on Park Street. The accident caused widespread gloom over the town Sunday evening. “Sammie”, as he was universally known, was a member of the freshman class at the N.H. Fay High school and was everywhere popular amoung his schoolmates and friends. He was a member of the basketball team of the High School which won the county championship last winter and was a member of the baseball squad. The family has the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Abie and George Fineberg. The Cayting boy from Bangor has been spending a few days in town, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Mayfield.
