Obituary
Ashley Olney, representative in this section of the Grand Union Tea Co., took his own life by hanging Wednesday. His lifeless body was discovered in the afternoon suspended by a small cord from a tree in the woods on the outskirts of the town on the Dover road. The discovery was made by W.H. Curtis and Arthur Brown who were engaged in a hunt for the man. Early Wednesday morning Mr. Olney left his home on Park Street with his team which he used in delivering tea, coffee, and spices about the district and it was understood by his wife that he was going to Corinna and would return to dinner. Instead, it is evident that he drove to the point in the Dover Road opposite the old trotting park, hitched his horse to a telephone pole and entering the woods on the left side of the road, took his own life. Not returning to his home for the noon meal Mrs. Olney became alarmed and notified friends of her husband’s absence. In the meantime people had noticed the horse and tea cart by the road side and search in that vicinity was instituted. Messrs. Curtis and brown soon found the lifeless body in the woods, several rods from the road. Life was extinct and it was evident that the man had been dead several hours. It was apparent that the man had entered the grove, carrying the small rope with which the hanging was accomplished and a box. Standing on the box he attached the rope to his neck and to the tree, afterward kicking the box from beneath his feet. Dr. Harry K. Thatcher was summoned and pronounced the man dead. The body was cut down and removed to the undertaking rooms of Hutchinson & Gates. No reason for the suicide is known. Mr. Olney has been a resident of this town for years, coming, it is understood from Massachusetts, and purchasing a home on Park Street where he resided with this wife. He was about 55 years of age.
