Obituary
The state of Maine lost one of its all-time baseball greats Friday. The death of 74-year old Billy Buckland at Corinna left a void in Maines baseball history for he was one of the outstanding players of a great diamond era. The little left pitcher had a career in baseball that spanned nearly 40 years, both to Maine Leagues, Canada and the Minor Leagues. A native of Scotland, he began his many mound feats in the state while attending Maine Central Institute. In 1913 he competed for Winthrop in the Trolley League, then one of the best in the state. He pitched for Skowhegan, Rockland, Corinna, Dexter and PCF at Great Works through 1919 and the following year became a member of Fredericks team in the Blue Ridge League. After stints with Lewiston and Sherbrook, Que., he rejoined that league with Hanover. Greenville and Guilford also became home teams for the speedballer who later became manager of the Easterns in the Eastern Maine League. He managed at Dexter and Corinna and 1947 began to taper off on his hurling assignments but always was ready and willing to help out with the home club. During that span he competed with the Del Bissonnettes, Ben Housers, Hughie Duffys and other of Maines baseball greats. He hurled close to 750 games and won over 500 of them with a score of no-hitters to his credit. In 1954 he was honored at the Bangor Daily News Sports Award dinner and inducted in¬to the News Hall of Fame. Any discussion about the states baseball history would produce the name of Billy Buckland for his name became a legend. His feats will be talked about for many years. Maines world of sports has lost one of its greats, and a great friend.
