Mrs. Lucy Blanche (Nutter) Atkins, 98, believed to be Dexters oldest resident, died Monday at the Plummer Memorial Hospital where she was taken Sunday following a fall at her Pleasant St. home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 12, at the Crosby Funeral Home at Dexter. Rene J. Dawe, pastor of the First Universalist Church, officiated. Interment will take place next spring in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Honorary bearers were: Thomas R. Tillson, Reynold F. Thompson, E. Carl Crocker, Floyd L. Hammond, Charles M. Coy and Russell Gerould. She was born at Ripley, Nov. 27, 1865, daughter of Richard and Lucy (Tripp) Nutter. Mrs. Atkins was the oldest living graduate of Dexter High School, Class of 1882, and the oldest living graduate of Farmington State Teachers College, Class of 1884. She had also been a special art student at Kents Hill Seminary. She taught school at Readfield and Mechanic Falls prior to her marriage to Albert Atkins of Corinna. After many years residence at Providence, R. I., she returned to Dexter in 1907. She was a member of the Wood-fords Congregational Church, Portland; a past worthy matron of Wassookeag Chapt., OES of Dexter; past president of the Dexter Womans Literary Club; and past regent of Rebecca Weston Chapt., D.A.R., which she aided in organizing. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Clyde Mower of Dexter; nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Among those attending the services were a niece, Mrs. Carroll Hodgkins, and her husband of Portland; and four grand nieces – Mrs. Norman Balabas of Brewer, Mrs. Dora Littlefield of Newport, Mrs. John Irvin of Corinna and Mrs Elinor Curtis of Naples. Miss Louise Todd of Portland, a close friend of Mrs. Clyde Mower, remained for a few days visit with the Mowers.
