Obituary
Mary E. Felker who passed to the higher life May 27, 1933, was born in Ripley, Aug. 20, 1858 the daughter of Elisha B. and Hannah Sevey Hoyt. She attended the public schools in Ripley also Corinna Union Academy, later taking a course in Castine Normal school. For several years she was a popular and efficient teacher beloved by all with whom she came in contact. On Jan.1, 1880, she was united in marriage to Frank B Felker of the same town and over fifty years of happily wedded life followed the union. Having no children of her own, those of her brother, William, living nearby, filled a large place in her heart. The loss of this only brother some ten years ago was a sad blow to her, but she bore it with calmness and fortitude. Always living in the home of her birth, she tenderly cared for her aged parents until they passed on. When she became an invalid herself and unable to care for her home, one of her nieces Mrs. Bertha Haseltine, with her family came to live with them, ever solicitious for her comfort. Her shut- in days were made brighter and happier by the contact of children in the home for the past seven years. Mrs. Felker was a charter member of Ripley Grange, and worked untiringly for the good of the order as long as her heath permitted, Possessed of a sweet, singing voice and gifted as a reader and writer she was ever ready to use her talents for the good of the community. Tho confined to the house and practically to her chair a long time, she always greeted her friends with a cheerful smile, a woman of rare intellect and real attainments a great reader and deep thinker, she maintained her interest in every affair, a brilliant conversationlist it was a pleasure for her friends to visit her. Ever cheerful, brave and patient, her life has been a noble example to all. She leaves to mourn her passing her aged husband, four nieces, Mrs. Josephine Kimball of Los Angeles, Calif. Eunice Hoyt of Waterville, Louise Robinson of Dexter, Bertha Haseltine, with whom she lived, and a nephew, Jesse Hoyt, of Dexter, also eight grandnieces and four grandnephews. Funeral services were in charge of Mr. Ramsay of Dexter and were conducted from the home Monday, May 29th, Rev. E. Mercer speaking words of comfort. Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Stafford sang two selections. The bearers were S.M. Hopkins, R. w. Mills, Clayton Courser and Llewellyn Decker. Interment was in Ferndale cemetery. Many beautiful flowers, reminders of friends who left to mourn. " She is not dead, our much beloved Auntie, We still can feel her gracious presence near; Some day the veil between us will be lifted To show her face so loving true and dear."
