Obituary
John Jones, one of Ripleys oldest and most highly respected citizens passed to the higher life at his home at West Ripley on Tuesday, Jan 22,1929, after a brief illness following a shock. Mr. Jones was the son of the late Harrison and Mary Ann Page Jones and one of a family of seven children, five girls and two boys. He has always lived on the farm where he was born on Aug. 22nd, 1844. His grandfather, John Jones, for whom he was named, came to Ripley from Hopkington, N.H., in 1813 cleared the land now comprising the Jones farm. Harrison at that time being 2 years of age. The farm has therefore been in in the Jones family for 116 years. Mr. Jones was never married. He cared for his father and mother and at the death of his mother, his sister, Mrs. Maria Mitchell, of Saco took charge of his house until her death three years ago. He was one of Ripleys largest potato growers and had a fine orchard of which he was very proud. Mr. Jones has always been a stanch Democrat and leader of his party in town, and it can truly be said of him that he was always a loyal supporter of the principles which his party at any time advocated. Being of a kind and jovial nature, and possessed of a pleasing personality, he mad friend where he went. Uncle John, as he was called by old and young, always had a pleasant and cordial greeting for all and he will be greatly missed, not only in his home town, but in other towns where he did business and was well known. Being a great reader and possessed of a wonderful memory, he always kept well posted on all event both in state and nation. He took great interest in al things in his home town, especially in the school in his own district. He was one of the founders of the Ripley Telephone Co., and for several years was one of its directors. In the passing of Uncle John the town has sustained a great loss. He is survived by his youngest sister, Carrie Jones of Saco, who is an invalid, also by four nephews, and two nieces. He was tenderly cared for in his last sickness by his nephew and wife Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Weymouth of Dexter and Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services were held at the home on Jan24th, conducted by Rev. Mr. Walker of Cambridge. Funeral arrangement were in charge of Galen Ramsay of Dexter. There were beautiful flowers from relatives and town people. The interment was in the family lot at West Ripley cemetery.
