Obituary
C.E. Hanson, one of Ripleys most honored and respected citizens, passed to the higher life t his home in Ripley village on Sunday morning, Feb.13th. Mr. Hanson had been in a serious condition for a long time. A few years ago he suffered a shock, which so impaired his heath that he was obliged to give up business. His condition slowly became wors until the end came. During the last weeks of his illness he was tenderly cared for by his wife and daughter, who have done all that loving hands could do to alleviate his sufferings. Mr. Hanson was born in Dexter on what is known as the Otis Rollins farm, on Oct. 14th, 1849. The son of Chas. and Phoebe Hanson and one of a family of 13 children, all of whom have passed on excepting one sister. Hr. Hansons parents moved to Ripley when he was very young, and he has been a life long resident of the town. On Aug. 22, 1875, he was united in marriage with Miss Medora Farrar of Ripley, who still survives him. Five were born to them, all of whom are living. Mrs. Carrie Hanson Vining, widow of the late lamented Frank N. Vining of St. Albans, Carroll J. Hanson of Presque Isle, Victor A. of Dexter Fred C. of Mars Hill and Clarence E. of Cambridge. He also leaves to mourn his death, 16 grandchildren and one sister , Mrs. Laura Bryant Tibbetts, of Dexter, besides several nephew and nieces. At the time of his marriage Mr. Hanson owned the Aaron Randall farm. After living there a few years, he sold and purchased the large farm known as the Dr. Todd farm at Todds Corner. he lived there for 23 years, being engaged in farming and the buying and shipping of all kinds of live stock. Selling this farm, he purchased the N.F. Woodcock farm, where he lived a few years, then gave up farming and purchased a place at Ripley village, where he devoted his time to the stock business. Mr. Hanson was one of the best known and popular cattle buyers in the state. He not only did an extensive business in Central Maine, but he bought largely in Aroostook county, and the Provinces. Being of good nature, he was always a welcome guest in the homes of the homes of the hundreds of men with whom he did business. Mr. Hanson dad the confidence and respect of the large number of people with whom he did business, as he always paid good prices and people were well pleased with the treatment they received at his hands. He was a kind husband and father, and a true friend to anyone in need of help. He has often been called the poor mans friend. Few there were that ever asked him for a favor, financial or otherwise that were ever turned, empty handed away. Mr. Hanson took a keen interest in the affairs of his home town. Because of his excellent judgment on the value of stock, he was many times elected to the board of selectmen. For years he was the towns popular tax collector which office he held at the time his health began to fail. Mr. Hanson will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. The funeral services were held from his late home on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 2 P.M and were largely attended. Rev. W.H. Dunham of the M.E church spoke words of comfort. The funeral arrangement were in charge of Galen Ramsay of Dexter. The four sons were the pall bearers. There were many beautiful floral offerings from the family and friends. The interment was in Ferndale cemetery, at Ripley village.
