Death Claims Former Dexter Physician Funeral services were held today, Thursday, at a Laconia, N. H. funeral home for Dr. Walter J. Hammond, 74, who died Aug. 1, after having been in a hospital for two days. The Rev. Z. William Colson, assistant pastor of the Laconia Congregational Church officiated. Interment was at Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, N. H. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Maud Hooper Hammond of Lakeport, N. H.; one son, Dr. Elwood J. Hammond, also of Lakeport; a brother, Louis A., of Rumford; a nephew and two grandchildren. Dr. Hammond was born May 22, 1881, the son of Arthur W. and Olive A. Ripley Hammond. He was a graduate of Hebron Academy, of Colby College and in 1910 was graduated from Bowdin College Medical School. A veteran of World War I, he served as a surgeon in an overseas base hospital. For 15 years was a practicing physician and surgeon in Dexter, before going to Bangor, where he was a member of the Bangor State Hospital staff for 13 years, until retirement as assistant superintendent in 1950. Since residing at Lakeport he has served as member of the Laconia State School staff for three years. He was a member of the Maine Medical Assn., the American Medical Assn., the Bangor Executives' Club and the J. W. Williams Post American Legion.
