Obituary
Only Death Reveals Aged Dexter Recluse Had Both Cash And Kin Choosing to keep a sizable sum of money hidden in his few poorly furnished rooms, and to exist without the bare necessities of life, William Tozier, 87, was found ill at his Dexter apartment on Saturday. Neighbors notified Chief Harold B. Knox and with Police Officer John Eaton he went to the home and removed Tozier to the local hospital. Chief Knox said that upon investigating, the sum of $2,130.80 was found in the aged man's home, and on his person. The greater part of the money was in a wallet inclosed in a black bag, which was concealed behind a trash barrel in the home. Police said that apparently Tozier was in the habit of sleeping on the floor in a blanket and existed on a very scantly diet. Tozier died Tuesday morning and Dr. Hans Shurman, attending physician, suggested advanced malnutrition and a slight shock as possible cause of death. The extreme deafness of the patient made it very difficult to gain information. Funeral services were held this afternoon (Thurs.) at the Crosby Funeral Home with the Rev. A. Allan Brough of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Hartland Village Cemetery. Born about 87 years ago in Charleston, he lived most of his life in Dexter. The survivors are four nephews, Ray, Chelsea and Roland Tozier, of Hartland; Preston Tozier, Caribou; a niece, Mrs. Allen Blodgett, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Tozier, both of Groveton, N. H.
