Dies Five Months Shy Of 100 Years Funeral were held Wednesday morning at the Crosby Funeral Home for Charles H. Oakes, 99, of Free street formerly of East Sangerville. Mr. Oakes, who would have observed his 100th birthday next September, died Monday morning at the home of his niece and nephew, Ethel and Omar F. Carr, on Free Street after a long period of failing health. The Rev. J. Robert Bath of the First Universalist Church officiated. The body was placed in the Mt. Pleasant receiving tomb and burial will take place later in the East Sangerville cemetery. He was born Sept. 15, 1855, in E. Sangerville, the son of Abel and Mary Knowlton Oakes. His entire life was spent in the old Oakes homestead in that town where he was engaged in farming, until he came to Dexter 10 years ago to live with the Carrs. Mr. Oakes was twice married: on Jan. 1, 1891, to Nellie A. Knowlton who died in 1907, and on June 4, 1927, to Ida Ordway, who has since died. He was a holder of the Golden Sheaf certificate, denoting 50 years' continuous membership in the E. Sangerville Grange. He is survived by one niece, Miss Ethel Carr of Dexter; two nephews, Omar F. Carr, Dexter, and Harold M. Carr of Keene, N. H.; and cousins.
