Obituary
Nathan Daggett, 85, on of Dexter’s oldest business men and most highly respected citizens, died Monday morning at his home on Free Street. His last illness was brief, as he was at his shoe store, daily, as usual until a little more than three weeks ago. Mr. Daggett was born in District No. 10, Dexter, June 2, 1860, the son of Timothy and Mary Fletcher Daggett. As a young man he worked in the Dexter Grange store for six years and in 1889 opened a shoe store which he conducted continuously for 56 years. Day after day, with seldom an exception, he was found at his place of business, and he will be greatly missed from Main Street, by his many friends, patrons, and business associates. Of a kindly and genial temperament, he was a man known for his integrity, and his friends were countless and of long standing. On June 20, 1892 he was married to Idella M. True and three years ago observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He was a regular attendant at the Methodist church, an honorary member of Plymouth lodge, I. O. O. F., a charter member of the Dexter Club and the Elkinstown Club. Surviving, beside his wife, are two, daughters, Mrs. Madelyn Haskell and Mrs. Carolyn Thomas, of Dexter; a sister, Mrs. Lettie Harling of Lowell, Mass., and by three granddaughters, Hilda, Elaine and Cynthia Haskell of Dexter. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, the pastor Rev. Gilman lane officiating, assisted by Rev. Gordon C. Reardon, of the First Universalist Church. A large number were in attendance and there was a profusion of floral tributes. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery and the active bearers were Rufus Tilson, George Vigue, Edwin C. Call, G. C. Davis, Charles L. Ryan and Charles S. Brewster. Honorary bearers were H. E. Hale, H. M. Gates, O. M. Carr, W. E. Brewster, C. H. Wyman, P.A. Hasty, B. L. Call, and P. S. Plouff. The stores in the business section were closed during the hour of the funeral in respect to Mr. Daggett. Among those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. William Pierce of Dover-Foxcroft, Mrs. Grace Wyman of Monson; Mrs. Florence Moody of Gardiner; Mrs. Nellie Briggs and Mrs. Lucy Thomas of Winthrop; Mrs. Wilbur Worth of Hallowell; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Denslow of Bath.
