Obituary
Masonic Rites For George H. Hall George H. Hall, 78, for many years associated with the cannery in Dexter and a well-known former town official and real estate broker here, died suddenly early Monday morning at his home on Water street. Masonic funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Universalist Church with the Rev. J. Robert Bath officiating. The body was placed in the Mt. Pleasant receiving tomb to await later burial. Members of Penobscot Lodge No. 39, A. F. & A. M. and Wassookeag Chapter No.44, ES, attended in a body. Bearers were: Keith Farnham, Gordon White, Dana Luce and Harry Dore of Dexter; Philip Additon of Ripley and John Demeritt of Dover-Foxcroft. The stores remained closed during the service. Mr. Hall was born in Abbot on April 21, 1876, the son of George A. and Sarah Merrill Hall. The family moved to Dexter in 1880 and he attended Dexter schools. After working for several years in the grocery store of F. H. Hayes, he went to work in the Hayes Canning Factory in 1900 and remained with them until 1918, assuming the position of superintendent in 1903. In 1918 Mr. Hall and Franklin F. Noyes of Waterville purchased the business and it became known as Noyes and Hall, Inc., and so remained until 1925. Upon the death of Noyes, Hall and his two sons, Guy H. and Charlie E., purchased the company and in 1932 the corporation name was changed to George H. Hall and Sons, Inc. The factory was sold to Charles A. Stewart of Cherryfield in 1951. Mr. Hall was a well-known real estate broker here and formerly conducted the Hall Ins. Agency. He served as president of the Maine Canners Association from 1941 to 1943, and was a director of the National Canners Association in 1945 and '46. In 1924 and '25 he served in the board of selectmen of this town, and was on the board of assessors from 1931 to '47. He was a past master of Penobscot Lodge No. 39, A. F. & A. M., a member of St. John's Royal Arch Chapter; a past patron of Wassookeag Chapter No. 44, OES, a member of the Old Guard Society; a past president of the Dexter Loan and Building Association, and a member of the First Universalist Church. He is survived by his wife, Wealthia A. Hall of Dexter; one sister, Mrs. Edith Jordan, of Lawrence, Mass.; two granddaughters, Marilyn A. Rinn, Pitcairn, Pa., and Jacquelyn M. Tempesta, Dexter; one grandson, Lawrence H. Hall, a student at Tilton Academy, Tilton, N. H., and one great granddaughter, Kathryn Ann Rinn, Pitcairn, Pa. Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral of George H. Hall were two grandchildren, Mrs. Samuel Rinn of Pitcairn, Pa., and Lawrence Hall, a student at Tilton Academy, Tilton, N. H., a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Leona Hall, of Cherryfield; and a brother-in-law, Harry Fifield, of Lawrence, Mass. note: photo on p.1
