DEXTER - Clayton D. Bennett Sr., 76, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend died suddenly Feb. 27, 2014, at his home in Dexter. He was born April 24, 1937, in Dexter, the son of Douglass and Evelyn (Carleton) Bennett.Clayton graduated from Dexter High School and Bowdoin College, and received a master’s degree from the University of Maine. He loved sports and played on several teams. He also was a member of the singing group “Meddiebempsters” at Bowdoin. He taught at schools in Sag Harbor, N.Y., and Pittsfield for 37 years. As an avid outdoorsman, Clayton particularly enjoyed his annual fly fishing trip to Lac Dubuc, Quebec, and camping at Denny. He also enjoyed ice fishing, especially at Ross and Spider Lakes, and he always looked forward to hunting season. In the summer he could be found at his camp at Tim’s Cove, Sebec Lake, or in his garden, or singing while working on the winter’s wood supply. Time spent with family and friends was always special to him.Clayton is survived by his wife, Judith (Grey) Bennett; daughters, Michelle Custer and husband, Art of Avon, Conn., and Marice Bennett and husband, Andy Burke, of Honeyoye, N.Y.; and son, Clayton Bennett Jr., of Newport; five stepsons, Tal, Scott, Kurt, Jason, and Joseph Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Charlie, Timmy, and Ben Custer, Anna and Grace Burke, Bradley and Brandon Bennett; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by a brother, Gary Bennett, and wife, Joan; and a sister, Barbie Haskell; and husband, Peter; a special brother-in-law, Robert Grey; and several cousins.
