DR. MALCOLM J. STEWART DEXTER-Dr. Malcolm J. Stewart, OD, 87, passed away unexpectedly February 4, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at the Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born September 16, 1922 in Kelliher, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Harry C. and Winnifred (Loft) Stewart. “Mac proudly served in the U. S. Navy during World War II with the rank of Signalman 2nd Class in both the Pacific and European Theatres. He was a graduate of Litchfield Academy Class of 1940, and the Massachusetts School of Optometry Class of 1949. He practiced in Dexter for 47 1/2 years before retiring in March 1996. He belonged to a number of community organizations, including the Masons, Jaycees, Dexter Club, Dexter Winter Sports Association, Kiwanis, the Lions Club, and served as chairman of the school board. He was a member of the Dexter Christian Church and the American Optometric Association. He enjoyed many happy summers at the family cottage on Lake Wassookeag in Dexter and at theirsummer home in Prospect Harbor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, )oy (Webster) of Dexter; 3 daughters and their husbands, Candace and David Mills of Lisbon, Meredith and Robert Andrews of Hopkinton, MA, Melodie and Russ Batson of Springvale; a son, Lance Stewart of Dexter; 7 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret and husband Dean Logan of Lisbon Falls; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Amy Stewart; and 3 brothers, Calvin, Robert, and Harry. A spring graveside funeral and committal service will be held 11 A.M. Friday, May 14th at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, with Pastor Lois Field officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Sunshine Club, do Nancy Baldwin, 59 Acadia Street, Dexter, ME 04930.
