GEORGE EDWARD BROWN DEXTER- George Edward Brown, 82, died peaceftilly on November 20, 2009. He was born September 4, 1927, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts to limes Smith and G. Canton Brown. For most of his childhood, he lived with his parents in Raleigh, Massachusetts at the family homestead. George served in the Coast Guard during World War II. An active writer and poet, he was Professor of Literature at the former Bradford College in Massachusetts and the former Ricker College in Houlton, Maine. George had a Bachelor’s degree from Brown University, a Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, and had done some Doctoral work at Duke University. Throughout his career, he met many well-known writers, including Donald Hall. He was an active member of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, Maine and had many friends there. He regularly attended services and enjoyed lengthy and animated debates with a core group of friends. His visitations to members in need were always greatly appreciated. In his last conversation with his minister, he said he would not miss experiencing global warming! He is survived by his wife, Theresa and daughter, Emily Brown, both of Stratham, New Hampshire. He is also survived by daughter, Beth Crouch of Marblehead, Massachusetts and a son, George Beckford Brown, of Hampton, New Hampshire. George was predeceased by a son, Seth, who died at age 6. He is also survived by his grandchildren Colleen, Julia, Olivia, and William. A service to celebrate his life will be held at the First Universalist Church of Dexter, Maine on December 5th at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Kathleen Allan officiating.
