Obituary
March- 9th the body of Miss Helen P. Gilman 45 years old who committed suicide last Friday, was found in her apartment on the top floor of the apartment house 228 Main St tonight by Otto Carlson, janitor of the building, who gained an entrance by means of a ladder through an open Window. On the table in the dining-room the police found a letter addressed to the chief of police, in which Mrs. Gilman wrote she was responsible for the act which she was about to commit. With this letter were about a dozen others, each of which contained a check to cover payment of a number of small debts. The body was found on a couch which was drawn into a fireplace containing a gas log on which all the burners had been opened. The opening to the chimney over the fireplace was covered up, together with all the window openings and the cracks of the doors leading to the room, The windows of the adjoining rooms had been opened so that gas which escaped from the room would pass through the open Windows and not harm the occupants of the other five apartments in the house. The open windows attracted the attention of Carlson, who had not seen Mrs. Gilman since last Friday, the day she wrote the letters found on the table. “Suicide by gas poisoning,” was the cause of the death, according to Medical Examiner George M. Durrell of Somerville, who viewed the body. Miss Bessie H. Gilman, sister of the dead woman, who lived with her in this city, is staying with the mother of George Brewster, a cousin, at Dexter, Me, who shot himself about three weeks ago. The dead Woman was employed for a number of years by the management of a Maine hotel as a purchasing agent, spending the winter in this city buying for the hotel and the summer at the hotel. She ‘is supposed to have a father living in Boston, but the police fatted to learn his name or address. When Helen returned from Maine to this city she left her sister with the aunt and it is believed that brooding over her loneliness and the death of half cousin caused her to commit Suicide The body was left in the apartment and a message sent to her sister in Maine.
