OWEN W. BRIDGES Dexter, April 7 Owen W. Bridges of this town, for many years prominent in business and fraternal circles in this section of Maine, died very suddenly Thursday evening. Mr. Bridges was climbing the stairs to Odd Fellows’ hail on Grove street, when he suffered a heart attack and died almost instantly. The deceased was 80 years of age April 1 and for practically a lifetime has been a respected resident of this town where for many years he was engaged in the marble cutting and monument business with Charles E. Morse under the firm name of Morse & Bridges. Mr. Bridges retired from the firm several years ago because of advancing age and ill health. He was prominently connected and active in Masonic an Odd Fellow circles, being a past worshipful master of Penobscot lodge of Masons, past high priest of St John’s Royal Arch chapter end past noble grand of Plymouth Lodge of Odd Fellows. He was much interested in the work of the lodge and was a constant attendant at all the meetings. Mr. Bridges was (a veteran of the Civil war, having served with distinction in the 22nd Maine regiment. He was prominent Sin the councils of Safford Post, G. A. R., of this town, and for years has taken an active part in the management of the Memorial Day program in Dexter. He was a public spirited man with the best welfare of Dexter close to his heart. He was an active champion of all movements for the town’s benefit, even in his declining years. He was widely known in this section of the state and was held in high esteem and respect by an unusually large circle of friends. In politics Mr. Bridges was always a Republican until the coming of the Progressive movement and six years ago he was nominee of the Republican Party for representative to the legislature from the Dexter-Garland class. Besides a widow he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William B. Brewster and a brother, Jacob Bridges who is a member of this town. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 o’clock.
