DR. WALTER J. GILBERT Word was received here Monday of the sudden death of Dr. Walter J. Gilbert, 79, a former Dexter resident and frequent visitor at the home of his cousin, Almon R. Page. Dr. Gilbert, a practicing ophthalmologist of Calais since 1899, died at his home in East Machias. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Herbert L. Wass of that town officiating. This afternoon (Thurs.) a brief service was conducted at the Crosby Funeral Home here, followed by interment in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Son of the late L. Walter and Amelia (Page) Gilbert of Dexter, Dr. Gilbert was born in Boston, March 9, 1875. He attended the University of Maine and Boston University. A graduate of Cleveland Medical College, he did his post graduate work at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Gilbert was a member of the Maine, New Brunswick and Washington County Medical societies. He was a member of the Masonic branches including Anah Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine. Dr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie (Snell) Gilbert, and two cousins, Mrs. Geneva Watson of Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Almon Page of Dexter.
