Major Gould, Dexter Native Dies In Florida Major William S. Gould Jr.,73, died Friday at McDill AFB; hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla., following an illness of one week. Born at Dexter, December 28, l889, he was the son of William Sanford and Grace (Ireland) Gould. He was educated in Dexter schools, was a 1911 graduate of the University of Maine, and attended Shaw Business College in Bangor. During World War I Major Gould served with the U. S. , Army's currier service in France. In 1927 he joined the U. S. Customs Service in Bangor and in l936 began service with the Alcohol Tax Unit. In 1938 he was recalled into the U. S. Army at Springfield Armory and during the World War II served in Italy and Japan. Following the war he served at Raritan Arsenal in New Jersey until his retirement in 1949 when he moved to St. Petersburg, where for a short period he was employed in the real estate business. Major Gould was prominently associated with many charitable organizations, and gained particular satisfaction in helping the blind; He also served the Tuberculosis Association, and the American Legion Hospital for Crippled Children. His close association and interest with charitable organizations gamed for him last year the St. Petersburg Lions Club cup as the Most Valuable Lion of the Year. Major Gould was also a member of the Anah Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine, St. John's Commandery, and was a Master ; Mason in the Greenville Lodge. For several years he was commander of the James W. Williams Post, American Legion, and served as American Legion II state adjutant for several years. Major Gould was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife, Letha of St. Petersburg; a son, William of Auburn; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Smith of Veazie; and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
