J. B. Cox, 55, prominent optome- trist, died Saturday evening at his home on Park street . He had been ill with influenza for the past two weeks, went to the office for the first time Saturday, fitted a pair of glasses and did some repair work. After re- tiring about 10 o'clock, he suffered a heart attack from which he did not rally. He was born in Topsfield, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Cox, and came to Dexter nine years ago, after residing for 20 years in Wilton. Late last fall he was appointed optometrist and time inspector for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and had an office at Brownville Junction. His Dexter office was in charge of his son, Byron Cox. Mr. Cox was a member of many of the Masonic orders, including Somer- set lodge and Somerset R. A. chapter of Skowhegan, of St. John's Comman- dry, and Kora Temple, Mystic Shrine of Lewiston. He was a member of Wilton Chapter, 0. E. S., and of the Maine Society of Optometrists. His wife, Mrs. Estelle Cox; a son, Byron Cox, both of Dexter, and two daughters, Mrs. Harold Hudson of Dexter and Mrs. Malcolm Davenport of Wilton, survive; also a brother, Lee Cox, of Wilton, and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Ford, and Mrs. Charlotte Kindler, both of Auburn, and Miss Lena Cox, of Washington, D. C. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Hudson, Upper Maple street. Rev. Horace H. Hayes of Milo, formerly pastor of the Dex- ter Free Baptist church, officiated. A solo, Thy Will Be Done, was sung by Mrs. Lilian Small, accompanied by Mrs. Helen Wilkins. The bearers were Dr. Walter J. Hammond, Kenneth Mower, Byron Cox, Harold Hudson, of this town, Lee Cox and Malcolm Davenport of Wilton. The remains were placed in the receiving tomb at Mt. Pleasant cemetery to be interred later in a lot there.
