Retired Diplomat Dead At 71 DEXTER — Juan Eugenio Mendoza, 71, died Thursday at his home after a long period of failing health. He was born at Ilo, Peru, Sep- tember 6, 1893, son of Carlos Enrique and Carmen (Almen- ara) Mendoza. He was educated in Lima, Peru, Paris, France and Lon- don, he received the doctor of law degree. He was a Peruvian diplomat, having served as min- ister to Colombia, Central America, Guatemala, London, Berlin, German, Rome, Italy and Washington, D. C. While he was a representative to the Vat- ican in Rome, he was made Knight of the Order of St. Greg- ory by Pope Pius XI. In 1944, he was legal adviser to the Peruvian Commission at the founding of the United Na- tions in San Francisco. Before he was forced to retire due to ill health in 1945, he was consul- ate general from Peru in New York City. He had made his home here since his retirement. He is survived by his widow, Imogen (Abbott) Mendoza of here; two daughters, Mrs. Car- men Rosita West of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Frederika Men- jdoza Stevens of San Rafael, Calif.; two grandchildren; a brother and two sisters in Lima, Peru; nieces, nephews and cous- ins. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Crosby Fu- neral Home, here, the Rev. Theodore Webb of Massachu- setts, former pastor of the Dex- ter Universalist Church, offici- ating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, here. 5-65
