JOHN W. SAWYER, M. D. 1865 - 1916 Dr. John W. Sawyer was born in Monmouth, Maine July 7, 1865, and died in Dexter January 22, 1919. Dr. Sawyer though born in Monmouth, spent much of his youth in Gardiner where he received his education in the public schools. Following his medical education he began the practice of his chosen profession. He settled in Dexter where he married Miss Mary Eaton, a successful teacher in our public schools. Dr. Sawyer served several terms as supervisor of Dexter schools. He was a man well liked and much respected, both professionally and as a private citizen. He was a member of the Masonic Order and of the Dexter Club. Also a member of the Universalist Church. He was a Director of the Dexter Trust and Banking Company. At the time of President Wilson's first election Dr. Sawyer served as one of the presidential electers for Maine. Dr. Sawyer was a staunch Democrat and twice hr represented the Dexter-Garland class in the legislature at Augusta.
