Obituary	A. PERRY WHITMORE BELFAST AND DEXTER - Allen Perry Whitmore, 71, of Belfast, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, where his wife and daughters had gathered. He was born on April 19, 1932, in Northeast, New York, the son of Harry Earl Whitmore and Virginia M. (Slater) Martin. Perry grew up in Dexter, attending school both in Dexter and Corinna. He graduated from Corinna Union Academy in 1950. After serving in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Maine, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Ph.D., also in English, from the University of Colorado in 1966. Perry was a college professor and administrator. He taught at Johnson State College, University of Dubuque, and Northeast Missouri State College. He later became the dean of the University of Maine, Presque Isle and vice president of both Simon's Rock Early College and Pikeville College. After serving as the dean of Urbana College, he was appointed president. He completed his academic career as the president of Sterling College, and later sat on their Board of Trustees. Perry's never-ending hobby with Kitty, his wife of 38 years, was fixing up old houses. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and most things mechanical, reviving old cars, motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles. He loved the English language and was a passionate reader and re-reader. Perry was a life-long teacher - a true teacher - the kind often regarded as a mentor. He valued his retirement years back in Maine, where he developed strong ties in his community and many dear friendships. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Stanley Stuart Martin and his two half brothers, Rex Whitmore and Philip Whitmore. Surviving are his wife, Katherine McFadden Whitmore of Belfast; his two daughters, Emily Enright Whitmore of Pescadero, California and Timmee Susan M. Whitmore of Thornton, New Hampshire; his brother Harry Earl Whitmore and his wife Priscilla of Portland; his two sisters Mona Louise Martin of Dexter and Frances Sarah Seamans and her husband Trueman of Dexter; six nephews and six nieces, including Melanie (Seamans) Young of Strafford, New Hampshire, Peter Seamans of St. Albans, Maine and Michael Seamans of Boulder, Colorado. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 95 Court Street, Belfast, with the Rev. Kent Tarpley officiating. The family invites all relatives and friends to the service and to share conversation and refreshments at the Lighthouse, 100 Court Street, Belfast, immediately following the service on Saturday. The Committal Service will take place the following day, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Bryant Road in Dexter. Again, all are most welcome.
