EDITH D. CLARK NEWPORT AND DEXTER, Edith D. Clark, 80, died May 2, 2003, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital following a brave bout with leukemia. She was loved and cared for by her immediate family for the past five months. She was born April 7, 1923, in Dexter, daughter of John J. and Celeste (Mountain) Clark. Edith was educated in Dexter schools and graduated from N.H. Fay High School class of 1941. She began a Federal Service career with the U.S. Department of Treasury and advanced in her career following further academic study with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School. Her illustrious federal service career culminated in her selection as Secretary to the Chief, United States Forest Service in 1973. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1980 with 37 years of government service. As a retiree, Edith worked from 1985 until her illness in December 2002 as a volunteer with the Parkview Hospital in Brunswick. Edith is survived by a sister and her husband, Rita and William R. Novak; a niece, Catherine Spaulding; nephews, John Novak, William Novak Jr. and his wife Tracy, David C. Novak and his wife Kathy, Michael Clark and his wife Debbie, Jack Clark and his wife Pam, Terrence Clark and his wife Karen, Timothy Clark and Bonnie Novak. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, John M. Clark. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Dexter on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.
