Obituary
EVERETT J. BENNETT DEXTER - Everett J. Bennett, 83, died Feb. 15, 1981, at a Dexter nursing home following a long illness. He was born July 8, 1897, in Dexter, son of Joseph and Ida (Davenport) Bennett. He grew up in Spooners Mills. He joined the Spooners Mills Fire Department as a teenager. He joined the Maine National Guard in 1914. He served in the Mexican Border Campaign in 1916 and most major campaigns in World War I. Mr. Bennett was a member of Co. A of the Yankee Division; a charter member of the American Legion; a past commander of the Poulliot-Seavey Post of Dexter, where he was a member for 64 years. He was a member of the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years and was employed as a machinist by the Fay-Scott Machine Corp., where he was forman of the assembly room during World War II and many years after. He was a past noble grand of the Odd Fellows. For several years he was a volunteer constable for Dexter, a member of the Dexter Fish and Game Association, and the Dexter Grange. He is survived by his wife, Alice (Seavey) Bennett of Cambridge, to whom he was married for more than 60 years; two sons, Sheldon Bennett of Tualatin, Ore., and Stephen Bennett of Pittsfield; one daughter, Mrs. Constance Short of Cambridge; one brother, Waldo Bennett of Albany N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Hanmer of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Hazel Welch of Ipswitch, Mass.; six grandchildren; five great-grand-children; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Everett Bennett Jr., who died in 1923, and Lloyd F. Bennett, who was killed in action during World War II. Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at the Crosby Funeral Home, Dexter, with the Rev. John Dunn of the First Baptist Church offficiating. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
