Obituary
Mrs. Mary Lane The many friends and relatives of Mrs. Mary Lane were saddened to learn of her death which occurred on Friday, Oct. 8, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Safford, after a brief illness. Mrs. Lane was born in Dexter, Maine, seventy-seven years ago last August, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nahun Nason. In early life she was united in marriage with Sewell Lane and to them were born six children, of whom four are living at the present time. Since the death of Mr. Lane, seventeen years ago, she has resided the greater part of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Safford. Although her life was a busy one, yet she was ever ready to give helpful counsel and aid to all, and her inspiring personality, Christian courage and loyalty have helped not only her own immediate family, but also a host of friends in their efforts to live more worthily. She was a church member communicant and that her character, life and labors were greatly beloved, was attested by the many floral emblems and offerings contributed at the time of her death. The date of the funeral was Monday forenoon, Oct. 11, at ten o'clock, the Rev. Stanley Gates Spear, pastor of the first Universalist church, officiating. Two appropriate hymns were sung by Mrs. Flora Abbott and Mrs. Clara Hayden Crossland. The funeral services were in charge of Charles S. Hutchinson, and the bearers were Messrs. Gershom Gould, Mandeville Russell, Joseph King and Howard Jones. The interment took place in the Lane family cemetery In Ripley. Among those relatives who survive the deceased may be mentioned four sisters, Mrs. Achsa Ewer, Mrs. Betsey Hart, both of Atkinson, Mrs. Julia Sampson of Sangerville and Mrs. Sarah Allen of North Dexter and one brother, Dexter Nason, of Dexter, also three daughters, Mrs. Etta J. Whitney of Ripley, Mrs. Carrie Safford and Miss Tina Lane, both of Dexter, and one son, Walter B. Lane of Shawmut who have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
