Obituary
Death of Eben M. Tibbetts. Eben M. Tibbetts., for a long term of years one of the leading citizens of Dexter, died at his home on Maple street last Monday evening, aged 69 years. Mr. Tibbetts has been sick for a long time and his death was not unexpected. He was taken to a sanitarium in Auburn last year and the favorable change in his condition led his friends for a time to hope for his recovery but a severe cold was contracted which nullified the previous improvement and a short time ago he was brought back to his home here with no hope of recovery. Mr. Tibbetts was born in this town May 21, 1834, and was educated in the common schools and academies. He was for ten years in the employ of the Eastern Express company and afterward mail clerk for five years between Bangor and Boston. While in Boston he was converted under the ministrations of Bishop Warren, then pastor of the North Russell street church, and led an active and consistent Christian life. He was at various times class leader, Sunday school superintendent, recording steward and trustee in the Methodist church here and in 1888 was lay delegate of the Eastern Maine Conference to the National Conference in New York, and in 1892 was elected alternate and attended the National Conference at Omaha as delegate. He had for many years been a trustee of the Bucksport seminary. From the above it will be seen that Mr. Tibbetts took great interest in religious matters and devoted much time, thought and labor to their advancement. In 1866 he bought a half interest in the furniture business in this village and later acquired the whole of it. From that time until 1891 when he sold to C. H. Wyman, he did a large business in furniture and undertaking, both manufacturing and selling. He was also express agent here for several years. He was active in town affairs and for nine years was a member of the board of selectmen, seven years as first on the board.
