Obituary	MRS. MARY C. SMART Services Sat. For Mrs. Smart Mrs. Mary C. Smart, 72, music supervisor in the Dexter schools for 38 years, and widow of Thomas A. Smart of Dexter, died Tuesday night, March 28, at a Bethesda, Md., hospital after a long illness. Friends may call at the Crosby Funeral Home at Dexter Friday Ili evening from 7 to 9 p. m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. at the First Universalist Church at Dexter with the Rev. E. King Hempel officiating. Inter- ment will take place later in the season at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Mrs. Smart was born at Chicago, Ill., August 22, 1888, the daughter of William and Mary (Wilson) Cowie, long-time residents of Gard- ner, Mass. Following her gradua- tion from Gardner (Mass.) High School and the Institute of Musical Arts at New York, she taught mu- sic at Wells River, Vt., and Wey- mouth, Mass., before coming to Dexter in 1910. She married the late Tbomas A. Smart, June 30, 1915. Having also studied drawing at the Boston Museum, during her first six years in Dexter she taught both music and drawing. In June, 1950, Mrs. Smart terminated her duties as music supervisor in the Dexter schools completing 41 years of teaching, 38 of which were in this town, and devoted her time to private teaching. For more than 30 years Mrs. Smart was actively identified with the Maine Music Camp as presi- dent, and at the time of her death was president of the board of direc- tors. She was a past president of Maine Music Supervisors, and had headed various state and dis- trict Music Festivals. A member
