Obituary	Mrs. Ellen Worthen Mrs. Ellen Worthen, widow of the late H. Q. Worthen, died at her home on lower Main street Monday night after an illness lasting since Christmas day, at the age of 75 years. Mrs. Worthen was born in Portage Lake, but had lived in Dexter for the past 50 years. Funeral services were held from the home this morning at 10 o'clock. She is survived by four sons, Frank Worthen of this town, C. J. Worthen of Bangor, Fred Worthen of Newport and Harry Worthen of Corinna; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur White of Litton, N. H. and Mrs. Harry Clark of Newport. She was a member of the Free Baptist church and very active in its affairs and will be missed by a large circle of friends. Mrs. Worthen was born in Portage Lake Aug. 16, 1849, the daughter of the late Mathew and Mary Stevens. When she was a small child the family moved to Hartland, and soon after the mother died, leaving a large family of children, and it was at this time that she went to Parkman to live with Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Kimball, where she made her home until she was united in marriage with Hosea Q. Worthen of Corinna July 10, 1869. Since her marriage Mrs. Worthen has always lived in Dexter and vicinity, where her sterling qualities and lovable disposition endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive her. She was a faithful wife and mother and always so loyal to her friends, and her heart was so tender to those in sorrow, made more so by the great sorrows she had to bear. Her first great grief was when she was a young woman in the loss of her little boy and then when her husband was taken from her it seemed almost more than she could bear, then later came the death of her daughter, Flossie, whom she watched over tenderly and lovingly, and through it all her faith in her heavenly father grew stronger. Mrs. Worthen was a valued member of the Free Baptist church for over 50 years. She was a devoted Christian and her work for her church was a labor of love and as long as she was able she worked hard for the support of it. The Eastern Gazette 3-18-1926, p.5
