Obituary
Capt. Frank F. Bement. Our people were greatly surprised and grieved to learn on Wednesday that Capt. Frank F. Bement died at sea last Saturday, the 18th inst. He was buried in the ocean which had been his home for so long. His death was caused by Bright's disease. His ship, the Asama, has arrived in New York and brought the sad news. Frank F. Bement was the son of W. H. P. Bement of this, town, and his early years were passed here. He was for some years employed in a tannery but this life not agreeing with him he went to England. He there married the daughter of a ship-master at Cardiff, Wales, which place has since been his home. He became a popular and efficient sea captain and has followed that occupation for many years. Although a resident of a foreign country and separated from his old home he never forgot his old friends or native place, but embraced every opportunity to return and visit the familiar scenes and comrades of his boyhood days. Many of our readers will know him only through his most interesting letters in the GAZETTE which have appeared frequently but all will feel they have lost a friend. His experiences had naturally been varied and interesting and he had a happy way of narrating them. His last visit here was a year ago last summer and all who attended the GAZETTE convention at that time will remember his happy manner and evident enjoyment of the occasion. No one thought then it would be the last meeting. The writer has received frequent evidences of his remembrance and interest in the GAZETTE in copies of papers from China and other foreign countries, the last being received but a few days ago. Capt. Bement leaves a wife and three children at Cardiff, Wales; a brother, Judson W. Bement, of Los Angeles, Cal, and a sister Miss Sarah J. Bement of Augusta. His age was 58 years.
