Obituary
Hiram Allen Keene. Hiram Allan Keene, a native and long-time resident of Dexter, passed to the unseen, Monday morning, May 18th, at the age of 74 years less one week. Mr. Keene was the son of Eleazer and Sarah Brown Keene. His boyhood home was upon the place now owned and occupied by Mr. Osgood Eaton. Except a brief period spent in New Jersey and a similar period spent in Skowhegan, Mr. Keene has resided in this place all his life. Fifty-two years ago he married Miss Sarah Cummings of Dexter with whom he lived until separated by death eight years ago. Two children, Walter P. and George R., were born to Mr. and Mrs. Keene. The former was drowned when eleven years of age. George R. died in the fall of 1896, leaving one son, Clarence, the sole descendant of Mr. Hiram Keene. Mr. Keene has been for many years an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church. At the time of his death he was church historian. Of late his lose of hearing has incapacitated him for holding other official positions formerly occupied by him. He was also a member of the Carrabassett lodge, I. 0. 0. F., of Skowhegan. The brothers of this lodge, aided by the lodge in Dexter, rendered Mr. Keene material assistance in his declining years and final sickness. Three years ago Mr. Keene took rooms in the parsonage of the Methodist church of Dexter. Here in declining health and strength, he passed the remnant of his days, unobtrusive, somewhat isolated from the world of men and affairs, yet bearing himself with cheerful and brave Christian resignation. Of him it may truly be said, that he died old and satisfied with living. A grandson, Clarence Keene, and his son's widow, Mrs. Addie M. Keene, are the only survivors of close kinship. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, his pastor, Rev. J. A. Corey, officiating.
