Obituary
Mrs. Susan Bassett Susan (Butler) Bassett, whose death occurred Jan. 25th, at the family residence on Zion's Hill, was born in Ripley, Maine, Feb. 5th, 1819, daughter of Joseph and Joan Butler. She came to Dexter in early life and was married to Hiram Bassett, May 22, 1841. The result of this union was five children, one of whom died in youth, Mrs. Ellen N. Derry, so well known in Dexter, who passed away in August, 1906. The three living are, Mrs. Clara Flynt and Mrs. Celia Page, who reside at the old home and Harry C. Bassett, of Auburn, Me. Of her own family, three sisters and two brothers are now living. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett early identified themselves with the Universalist society of this place and were regular attendants while health permitted. They loved their church and labored for its welfare. Of a quiet, dignified nature Mrs. Bassett drew about her a wide circle of friends, who loved her for her grace of manner and kindliness of heart. She will be missed by a large number of friends, and especially in the home, where every plan was made with consideration to her wishes and comfort. The world is the better for her having lived in it. No longer will she welcome us to her pleasant home here. "But somewhere, yet, in the hilltops, Of the country that hath no pain, She will watch in her beautiful doorway, To bid us a welcome again." Funeral services were held at the old home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Stanley Gates Spear officiating. Many exquisite floral offerings testified to the fragrant memory of her life. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Samuel Eldridge, C. P. McCrillis, Dana Crockett and W. H. Carr. Thus, another one of those who belong to the early life of Dexter, has passed to her rest.
