Obituary
The Death of Dr. Clough. Few persons who have lived in Dexter in recent years have been better known in this vicinity than Dr. Gilman B. Clough, who died in the afternoon of Saturday last, aged nearly 58 years. He came to Dexter in the spring of 1857, and settled here to engage in the practice of medicine. He soon took a leading rank among the physicians of the place and for many years enjoyed a large practice, having been the family physician for very many of the families in this and surrounding towns. He was a man of more than ordinary ability in his profession. He was also engaged in trade for many years but never took active charge of the business. He was born in Readfield, Me., Oct. 10, 1828, and was son of Jacob and Hannah Clough. Besides the common schools of his town, he attended the Augusta High School, where he was both thorough and proficient in his studies. He commenced the study of medicine with Dr. H. H. Hill, of Augusta, one of the foremost men in the State, and later graduated from the Medical School of Maine, at Bowdoin College, and the Medical School of the University of New York. He was married in the fall after he came to Dexter, to Miss Ellen Norton of Belgrade, and since then Dexter has been their home. Dr. Clough's health has been poor for several years past, so much so that he found it necessary in a great measure to relinquish the practice of his profession. For the past year he has at times been very ill and much of the time has been confined to his house. The funeral occurred on Monday, Rev. A. G. Hill, of Dover, officiating. He was buried with Masonic honors.
