Masonic Funeral For Rufus Tillson Masonic funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Universalist Church for Rufus H. Tillson, 57, prominent Dexter merchant, who died Saturday at his home on Pleasant street after a year's illness. The Rev. J. Robert Bath, minister of the church, officiated. Interment was in the family lot at Mt Pleasant cemetery. Poulliot-Seavey Post No. 53, American Legion attended in a body. Local places of business closed from 2 to 3 o'clock. Active bearers: Charles Coy, Edwin C. Call, Elwin Farnham, Fred Quigley, Thomas Knight, Marvin Salisbury. Honorary bearers: A. Howard Smith, Presque lsle; Clayton Courser, Pittsfield; Stanley Bement, Judge James F. Cox, Samuel Fellows, Sr., and Reynold F. Thompson, all of Dexter. He was born in Dexter, May 18, 1895, son of the late Harry L. and Mary (Pierce) Tillson. A graduate of Dexter High School in 1915, he attended Bowdoin College until he entered the armed services in World War I. In 1919 he became associated with his father in the hardware business and the following year married Edith Marden of Fairfield, who survives. Mr. Tillson was active in local music groups and was a member of the Shrine band of Bangor. He was a past high priest of St. John's Royal Arch Chapter, a member of Anah Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine, and a member of Penobscot Lodge, No. 39, A. F. & A. M. He was also a member of the First Universalist Church, Dexter Kiwanis Club and Poulliot-Seavey Post 53, American Legion. (note: photo accompanied article)
