HARVEY E. KNOWLES Harvey, Elwell Knowles, 63, long prominent in business and frater- nal circles, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital, following a long period of ill health. Mr. Knowles was born in Coritina Oct. 27, 1876, the son of Charles and Almira (Bigelow) Knowles. Following his attendance in the Corinna town schools and Dexter High school, he completed a busi- ness course at the Bangor Business College, He was employed for some time in the office of the Sawyer Boot & Shoe Co., of Bangor; then became associated with the J. M. Arnold Shoe Co., advancing with this concern until he became part owner, and serving for many years as treasurer. In the summer of 1934 Mr. knowles opened a lobster pound at ast Belfast under the name of Colonial Gables, which he con- ducted successfully up to the time of his, death. Long interested in fraternal af- fairs, Mr. Knowles was last year elected Illustrious Potentate of Anah Temple, eastern Maine unit the Mystic Shrine. serving with faithful efficiency as head of the local Shrine activities , throughout the year. He was elected a reore- entative of Anah Temple at the brine Imperial Council session in Los Angeles in 1938 and again for he imperial session at Baltimore, Md., in 1939. Masonic affliliations included membership in and a Past Master of, St. Andrew's lodge, No. 83, F. and A. M.; Mt. Moriah Royal Arch chapter; Bangor council, R. and S.M.; St. John's Cornmandery, K. T., Eastern Star lodge of Perfec- tion; Palestine Council Princes of jerusalem, and Bangor Chapter of Rose Croix, all of Bangor; and the Maine Consistory at Portland. He was also a charter member and past president of Bangor Kiwanis club, and a past chancellor com- mander of the local Knights of Pythias, having also the Grand Lodge degree. Mr. Knowles death will bring re- gret to a wide circle. He had a kindly and pleasant persoality, and none could have been more considerate of others. He tire- less in his efforts for the fraternal organizations with which he was affiliated, and his fine loyalty was appreciated by his fellow-members. The Prominence that came to him in both business and social life was richly merited. On June 24, 1902, Mr. Knowles married Miss Ollie Jean Morrisey of Bangor, who survives him. He is survived also, by two sisters, Mrs. Robert E. Palmer of New- port and Mrs. Mabel Ober of Dex- ter; a brother, Albert Knowles of Coriiina; Mrs. Pauline M. Whit- . more of Bucksport and Mrs. Louise B. Miller of Orono, nieces; and other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afernoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence, 40 Kenduskeg Avenue.
