Obituary
John P. Ireland. John P. Ireland was born in Milburn (now Skowhegan) Feb. 5, 1819, and died in South Brewer, Nov. 27, 1904. Mr. Ireland was one of the old-time citizens of Dexter and, although he had not lived here for many years, yet by reason of his frequent visits and associations here he had been practically one of our own people since he came here as a boy on the removal of his parents to this town from St. Albans nearly seventy-five years ago. Probably no man living in recent years was so familiar with the early history and growth of this place as he. While he was the last of a family of nine children who grew to manhood and womanhood in town, he was also one of the last of the early residents. He was remarkably active in mind and body, even in the feebleness of extreme age, and remained so until a few days before his death, although in failing health for the past two years. Up to twenty-five years ago no man was better known in this vicinity than Mr. Ireland, and he had a wide acquaintance in Maine and New Hampshire in recent years. He was a member of the Methodist church here for many years and, perhaps with one exception, was the only person living; who was present at the dedication of the old church, seventy years ago. His wife died in Dexter in 1870, and he is survived by three sons and a daughter: Francis A. of Pittsfield, Mass.; Eben A. of Madison; Olin F. of Oldtown, and Mrs. Flora E. Shorey of Rochester, N. H. Mrs. W. S. Gould of this place is a granddaughter. The remains were brought here for interment in Elmwood cemetery. Brief services were held at the residence of his grandniece, Mrs. R. P. Hobbs, in South Brewer, Tuesday, Rev. E. H. Boynton officiating. The funeral services here were conducted by Rev. B. G. Seaboyer, in the Methodist church, Wednesday, at 10 a. m. The three sons of the deceased were present at the funeral, but the daughter, Mrs. Shorey, was unable to come.
