Obituary
Jacob Bemis The death of Jacob Bemis, one of Dexter's oldest residents, occurred Friday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ida Lawrence on Free street. His death was the result of a general breaking down due to old age. Mr. Bemis was the son of David and Hannah (Jordan) Bemis and was born in the town of Pownal in 1820 and was at the time of his death, eighty –seven years of age. He lived in Pownal till six years old when his parents moved to Wellington where he grew up and in 1843 married Almeda Corson, and soon after removed to Jeansville, Wis. Here he lived two or three years. On the death of his wife he returned to Wellington and lived there for several years and in 1857 married Lovina, daughter of James Staples of that town, later removing to Corinna where he has lived for the greater part of the time since. Mr. Bemis was the father of fourteen children, of whom thirteen survive him, Mrs. Etta Palmer and Mrs. Leonard Ward of Dover. Mrs. J. G. Irish of Kittery, Mrs. Ida Lawrence of Dexter, W, J. Bemis of Corinna, Mrs. Bradbury Walker of Exeter, Mrs. C. L. Palsifer of Corinna, Mrs. L. E. Cummings of Exeter, E. B. Bemis of Dexter, Dr. O. I. Bemis of Bangor, Wendall W. Bemis of Boston, Miss Della M. Bemis of Dexter, and Elwin R. Bemis of Springfield, Mass. The funeral took place Sunday from the Advent church of which Mr. Bemis was a member, Mr. Gowdy of Corinna officiating.
