CYRIL EARL GILBERT AUGUSTA - Cyril Earl Gilbert, 78, formerly of Bath and Port charlotte, FL, died January 13,1999, Maine General Medical Center after a long illness. He was born in dexter on May 31, 1920, the son of Joseph and Emma (Clukey) Gilbert. He attended Dexter schools and was a communi- cant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in bath. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private and spent time with the 4th Infantry Division, landing on the beaches in Normandy during the "D- Day" invasion. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He received a battlefield com- mission as a 2nd. Lieutenant. He was discharged as a lst Lieutenant in 1946. After returning home from the war, Mr. Gilbert became a member of the maine National Guard, retir- ing as a Lt. Colonel after 28 years of service. He was married on August 4, 1945 to Kathryn Maynard. Mr. Gil- bert then worked for A&P Tea Com- pany for 28 years. He also worked for a time for Abbott Woolen Mill. He was a member of the American Le- gion, Post #110 in Port Charlotte, FL and the Fraternal and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #2378 of Engle- wood, FL. He was pre-deceased by his brothers and sisters. He is sur- vived by his wife of 53 years, Kathryn (Maynard) Gilbert of Augusta; two sons, Gary M. Gilbert and his wife Cheryl of Bath and Mark A. Gilbert and his wife Joanne of Sidney;a daughter Mary A. Trujillo of Rich- mond; seven grandchildren, Michael A. Gilbert, Tiffany E. Schofield, Wendy M. Gilbert, Christopher A. Gilbert, Mercedes M. Trujillo, Henry A. Trujillo and Rosalie L. Trujillo;, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Following cremation, committal prayers were held January 19, at the Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Burial followed at the cemetery.
