Obituary
Josiah L. Owen. Josiah L. Owen, the well known conductor died at his home on Lower Main street last Sunday morning after an illness of several months, age 82 years. Although it was known that he could not recover yet his death came as something of a shock to the many who had known him so long and favorably. Mr. Owen was born in Wales, near Leeds Junction, Dec. 12, 1822. His father was David Owen. He commenced his life work on the Leeds and Farmington railroad in 1852 in the humble position of pump tender. He was soon promoted and after several years service went into the employ of the Maine Central as baggage master. He continued in that position until 1869, when the road to Dexter was opened and he was made conductor. This position he held with the entire confidence of the Company and the traveling public until he resigned in 1897, at the ripe age of 75 years. After the road was continued from here to Foxcroft he moved to that village but always retained his home here and on resigning came back here to spend his remaining days. Always one of the most genial and obliging men he quickly won the regard of all the traveling public who met him and there are few indeed who possessed as many and as warm friends as "UncleJosiah." He was on the road for 45 years, a record few attain, and when he resigned he kept up an interest that never ceased until his last illness. So long as he was able he always appeared at the door at train time and exchanged signals with the boys on the train. Later he had a lighted lamp placed in the window. He was an ideal conductor and one all could copy with benefit. He leaves a wife and one brother. The funeral was held at the house Wednesday forenoon, Rev. W. H. Gould officiating.
