Obituary
John R. Herring, one of our old and highly respected citizens, died at his home, corner of Spring and Center streets, about 11 o'clock Monday evening from the effects of an apoplectic shock received the forenoon of the same day. His age was 76 years, 10 months, 15 days. Mr. Herring was born in Guilford and was a carpenter by trade. He came here in his youth and for a long term of years was in charge of the carpenter work about the Dumbarton mill. He had been in poor health for the past few weeks but had so far recovered as to feel like resuming his duties and was engaged about them when the shock came. He was a man that was most highly regarded by all, and especially by those most intimate with him. He leaves a wife and one son, M. F. Herring, formerly publisher of the Dexter Gazette, now merged in the EASTERN GAZETTE. He arrived in town Tuesday morning, also a brother and sister of the deceased. The funeral will be held from the house Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with full Masonic service, he being a member of Penobscot lodge, F. & A. M., also of Plymouth and Martha Washington lodges, I. 0. 0. F.
