PHILIP R. MEALEY SR. DEXTER - Philip R. Mealey Sr., 86, died April 14, 1999, at a Pitts- field hospital. He was born Feb. 21, 1913, in So. Gardiner, the son of James and Lena (Hall) Mealey. He graduated from Machias High School, Class of 1930. He then at- tended Washington State Normal school in 1930. He recieved his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine in 1937 and a masters degree in edu- tion from UMO in 1951. While in high school and college, Phil par- ticipated in many athletic and dra- matic activities. Baseball was his outstanding competitive sport, being a catcher on the UMO 1937 math at Danforth Junior High School for 2 years and then for 11 years at Caribou High School, where he served as assistant principal and basesketball and baseball coach. He was the principal of Dexter High School for 13 years and of the Brewer High School for 13 years. Phil was well known for his interest in high school sports. He served as football and basketball official in northern and eastern Maine for 25 years and was active on several Maine State Principal Association committees, including basketball, football, baseball, winter sports and the Executive Committee. He was president of the New England Council of Secondary School Princi- pals, former president of the Aroostook County Schools Men's Club, Dexter and Brewer Teacher's Clubs. For 15 years he was a mem- ber of the National Foundation of High School Football Rules Commit- tee and served as vice chairman of the Game Administration Committee in 1973. He was also a member of the Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis. Phil was known as the originator of the "Little Ten" football conference and was known for the "Mealey-Point" sys- tem for rating high school teams. In 1992, he was elected to the Maine Coach's Roll of Honor. He was predeceased by his wife of 56, years, Malvina (Levasseur) Mealey. He is survived by three sons,Philip Mealey Jr., of Newark, N.J., Peter and his wife, Barbara Mealey of Dexter and Mel Mealey of Lady Lake Fla., a sister, Eleanor Black of Machias; a sister-in-law, Frances Mealey of Fairfield; five grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, several nieces nephews and a special friend, Anna Hutchinson of Winslow. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Crosby & Neal Fu- neral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter, with the Rev. Antonio Amato offici- ating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
